A funeral program contains biographical information about the deceased and an outline of the funeral memorials services (sometimes called the order of service). Funeral programs can enhance your funeral or memorial service and give it that extra special touch.  Use tips will help you to select a memorial or funeral program template that captures your loved ones personality.  The right design along with the perfect funeral poems, prayer or scripture will make your funeral program special.

1.  Select a design that best represents your loved ones personality, such as a simple, straight-forward, conservative (subtle shades of softer colors, such as pink and lavender) or wild and adventurous (splashes of red, purple, and orange).

2. Find the right funeral poem, funeral reading, or song (lyrics) that offers consolation to you or meant a lot to your loved one?  Consider using personalized letters and notes in the funeral program.

3.  Include a photo of your loved one.   Decide if you want a recent photo, or  an older photograph such as a photo from a wedding, from high school, or the military

4. Consider using  family photos (photo collages) in the funeral program.

5. List information about  special life events (e.g. graduations, marriages, military service/awards, jobs, volunteer service, and retirement)

6. Include an obituary in the funeral program.

Funeral songs are a very important part of funeral and memorial services.   Choosing the right funeral songs can help comfort grief, and can help us express our emotions during this difficult time.  Funeral songs can come from a wide variety of genres, including religious, classical, jazz, pop, soul, country and rock and roll.  You can choose songs from the deceased’s favorite artists, or you can choose songs based on their lyrics.  You can also include the lyrics in funeral programs, so that guests can sing along.   The internet has many websites and resources that list good songs for funerals, and well as sites that will allow you to listen to the songs, and purchase them.  For information on funeral songs and music, check our this article on funeral songs.

A funeral program is a printed document that is given to guests at a funeral or memorial service.   The funeral program usually has a picture of the deceased, and contains information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as specific information about the individual.   Here is a quick list of the information that can be included in a funeral program.

  • The deceased’s photo
  • Funeral Program Title or Caption (such as “Homegoing Service” or In Remembrance)
  • The deceased’s full name, birth date and death date
  • The Order of Service (Contains the details of the Funeral or Memorial Service)
  • The Obituary
  • Funeral Poems
  • Song Lyrics (if singing along with musical selections)
  • Additional Photos or Collages
  • Thank you verbiage and acknowledgments

Funeral program templates are a quick inexpensive way to create a beautiful funeral program.  Funeral program templates are pre-formatted documents that have graphics on the cover, and placeholder information for all of the elements of a funeral program.  Follow these simple tips to select a design and create your treasured keepsake.

1.  Decide on a design of theme.  You can search the internet for pre-designed templates with a variety of graphic designs.  Try to find a design that will reflect you loved one’s uniqueness.  Funeral program templates come in a variety of colors and themes, including floral, landscape, religious and more.

2.  Once you have selected a design, decide what layout you need.  Funeral program templates can come in a variety of paper sizes and layouts including, bi-fold, tri-fold, graduated styles and can be sized at 8 1/2 x 11″, 8 1/2 x 14″ and 11″ x 17″ and more.  Your size and layout selection will be determined by how much information you want to put in your program.  Funeral Programs can contain the order of service, funeral poems, funeral scripture verses, obituaries and photo collages.  Decide which elements you will include and pick the layout that accommodate all of your information.
